The Sacred Art of Spiritual Friendship

Spiritual Friendship Is a Different Kind of Knowing

Friendship is one of the most tender mirrors we'll ever look into on this path.

I want to talk about the people who walk beside us, the ones who come and go, the ones who trigger us, and the rare, sacred few whose hearts seem to beat in the very same rhythm as our own.

So many of you have written in feeling lonely on the awakening road. Feeling like the "black sheep." Wondering why some friendships suddenly feel heavy, why others fall away, and why — every so often — you meet someone and it's like you've known them across a hundred lifetimes.

Sweet souls, let's talk about it!

———

There's a particular magic to meeting someone who is also walking this path. When you find that person who lights up when you mention energy, or crystals, or a dream you had, or a galactic being you connected with — it's an activation. Suddenly you can talk about anything and everything, the things you can't share with just anyone at the grocery store.

A spiritual friendship has an anchor of connection to the divine. That's the difference. It's the recognition of oneself in another — that feeling of "I'm seen, I'm heard, I'm not crazy to this person." You can be fully yourself, embody your higher self, and talk freely about your relationship with Source.

You think of them, and they text you in the same moment. You don't have to talk every single day, but you somehow always know where the other one is. You ground each other without even being asked. Your hearts simply go boom, and theirs go boom — same sound. And the friendship begins.

———

Seeing Each Other as Lights

One of the most powerful shifts you can make is to stop seeing the people around you through the lens of judgment, and start seeing them as lights walking around.

I wonder what that light has been through. I wonder how that light feels. I wonder how that light experiences life.

When you meet another soul who carries that divine connection, it's a humongous gift, because you get to expand each other. You can look at someone a little further along and say, "I want to rise to meet that level" — and know that you can. The path is expansive, never-ending, freeing. And it's so much sweeter when shared.

When Friendship Brings Karma (And Why That's Okay)

Not every spiritual friendship is easy, and a hard one isn't a less spiritual one. Sometimes you meet someone you have karma with — and the connection feels wonderful at first, then turns difficult as the pain between you magnifies. That's not punishment. That's an invitation to clear something old between your souls.

Here's the freeing truth: karma is something you can be liberated from completely. You don't have to stay on the wheel. Drop into your heart space in meditation — your heart always knows if there's karma looping. And remember the gift of forgiveness: it dissolves the threads that bind you to another across lifetimes. You don't have to wait for the other person to forgive you. You only have to wait for you.

When the karma clears, what's left is atonement, reconciliation, and a ceiling so high you can't even see it.

Boundaries, Discernment & "Is This Mine?"

Because spiritual friends are so often deeply empathic, you'll feel each other's stuff. So a practice I want to give you:

When something feels a little off, gently ask — "Is this in me, or is this in them?"

Know yourself so well that you can tell the difference. Take radical responsibility for your stuff, and lovingly let your friend carry theirs. The healthiest friendships hold this: that's your stuff, this is my stuff, and we love each other through both.

And the simplest discernment tool of all: Does this feel good to me? If you keep thinking about a friendship in a negative way, something is asking to be looked at — whether it's in you, in them, or simply timing.

———

The Right Friends — At the Right Time

This is so important, beloveds: there are friends who are right for you, and there are friends who are right for a season.

Some souls come into your life to serve a beautiful purpose for a window of time — and then they go. And part of the work is letting them go. The threads we keep tugging on (even just by thinking about someone over and over) keep both of us looped in the same old pattern. By releasing them, you set them free — and you set yourself free, too.

Stay in your own lane. Keep your timeline. When your lane is clear and aligned, it naturally attracts the right people — the soul family, the soul sisters, the ones where it's just effortless. You don't have to chase. You don't have to make anyone check off a list. You only have to stay attuned to that feeling of this is right.

———

As you move through your week, notice your friendships with soft eyes:

  • When you think of a friend, do you feel expansion or contraction? Let your body tell you the truth.

  • Is there a connection that's felt "off" for a while? Sit in your heart in meditation and ask whether there's karma asking to be cleared — and whether forgiveness wants to move through you.

  • Is there someone you've been holding onto out of habit or guilt? Could you lovingly release the thread and set you both free?

  • And the beautiful one: is there a soul in your life who is simply easy — where your hearts beat together? Tell them. Honor them. That's no accident.

Friendship on this path isn't about collecting people. It's about recognition, resonance, and love that wants the other soul to be as conscious, as joyful, and as free as possible.

I love you. I see you. And I see your light.

Sending you the biggest hug.

If you'd like to go deeper on this — including what love really is within a spiritual friendship, how to navigate karmic connections, and how to hold loving boundaries with the empaths in your life — the full conversation lives across Episode 4: "Friendship on the Spiritual Path" and Episode 5 (where Jess and I continue the friendship conversation, including the karma and forgiveness work) of The Soul Essence Podcast. You can find them both on the podcast page. And if you're feeling called to clear a karmic tie or strengthen your discernment one-on-one, my booking page is always open to you.
