Who Are You, Really?
by: Jac Kalea Patio, HHP
There is one question that lives quietly underneath every other question you've ever asked on this path. Underneath the "What's my purpose?" and the "Why do I feel so different?" and the "What am I even doing here?" — underneath all of it is a single, holy question:
Who am I, really?
I've been feeling spirit nudge me to write to you about this, because so many of you are moving through a tender season of not-quite-knowing yourself. You've outgrown an old version of you, but the new one hasn't fully arrived yet. You feel it in your bones — I'm more than this — and yet you can't always name what the "more" is.
Sweet souls, that ache is not a problem. That ache is the awakening. Let's talk about it.

Why "Who Am I?" Is the Most Sacred Question on the Path
Here's something I want you to really let land: seeking to know who you are is not a selfish, egoic thing. It's the opposite.
So many of you have been made to feel that wanting to know yourself, wanting to understand your gifts, wanting to feel like you — is somehow vain or self-absorbed. It isn't. The longing to know who you truly are is your divinity calling you home. It's your soul saying, I can feel it. I know I'm more than whatever this is. There has to be more to me. And there is.
You did not come here to be the version of you that struggles all day, that fights with your partner at home, that dreads the job, that feels perpetually unseen. You couldn't have possibly come in that way. That questioning — Who am I actually? Who am I really? What is the truth of me? — is the beautiful beginning of remembering.

The Self You Think You Are vs. the Self You Actually Are
Here's where it gets important, and where I have to be honest with you, because I love you too much not to be.
The self that most people identify with — the personality, the story, the "this is just how I am" — that's the ego identity. And the ego is not your enemy, but it is not the boss, either.
The ego came in with the duality experiment. It's the part of you that can forget its oneness with Source, the part that says "I am separate, I am alone, I have to protect myself." When that lower self is running the show — imbalanced, wounded, co-opted by outside conditioning and programming and other people's paradigms — you end up living as a smaller, distorted version of yourself. You end up parading around as someone who isn't actually you, or letting someone else's idea of you wear your face.
But here's the truth underneath: you come from the divine. Your soul is a spark of golden light, the same gold as Source itself, that chose to come here with a specific set of lessons and a specific mission. That is the real you. Not the wounds. Not the fear. Not the trauma. Not the roles other people assigned you.
The work of the awakening path is not to destroy the ego. Please hear me — that never works, and it's not the assignment. We don't abandon the ego by pushing it away and trying to make it die. We abandon it by integrating it. The soul, the higher self, the light of you becomes the master, and says to the ego: "You are a part of me. You don't get to run things anymore. You don't get to be dark. You serve the light now."
That's what it means to become who you actually are. The higher self moves in, chakra by chakra, and the ego finally takes its rightful place — as a helper, not a ruler.

Your Identity Has a Home in the Body
Something I love to share, because it makes all of this so much more grounded and workable: your sense of identity actually lives somewhere in your energy system. It lives in the solar plexus — the seat of the "I Am," the seat of your ego sense and your personal power.
This is why, when you're in an identity crisis — going back and forth, questioning everything, feeling like you don't know who you are anymore — it so often shows up as that churning, unsettled feeling right in your center, in your gut. That's not random. That's your solar plexus letting you know it needs attention.
An integrated solar plexus is you, directed by your true self, your higher self, your heart. An imbalanced one is you being run by external programming, old relationships, conditioning, and paradigms that were never yours to begin with. So if you've been feeling that identity churn, be gentle — and be curious. Your body is showing you exactly where the work is.

We Come to Know Ourselves Through Each Other
Here's one more piece, because it's one of the most beautiful gifts of being human. We are all one. We all come from the same Source. And because of that oneness, the people around you are constantly reflecting you back to yourself.
We live in a world full of illusion, so you can't always just look in the mirror and see the whole truth of who you are. Sometimes you're even deceiving yourself without knowing it. But when something in another person really bothers you — or really lights you up — that's information. So when you notice a strong reaction to someone, check three things: Do I have this and dislike it in myself? Is this something in me I've just uncovered? Or am I projecting my own stuff onto them?
That's not meant to make you spiral. It's meant to set you free. The people in your life are helping you meet yourself.

You don't have to figure out your entire identity in one sitting. It doesn't come as a whole book handed to you — the human mind and body can only integrate so much light at once. It comes in parts, in layers, as you're ready. So this week, just begin:
Notice where you say "that's just who I am." Ask, gently: is that the soul talking, or an old story I inherited? You don't have to fix it. Just notice.
Check in with your center. When you feel that identity churn in your gut, place a hand on your solar plexus and breathe. Remind it: My true self is in command here.
Use your reactions as a mirror. When someone really irritates or really inspires you this week, pause and ask what it's showing you about you.
Ask the holy question and then listen. Set aside a quiet moment — a notebook, an open heart — and simply ask: Who am I, really? Then let your higher self answer, without forcing it.

Once you begin to know who you truly are in your divine essence, you become unstoppable here. You stop letting the matrix, the fear, the past, and other people's definitions decide who you get to be. And you get to feel that quiet, grounded joy of: This is me. I know it. I've still got things to work on — but at least it's actually me.
There is nothing that beats that feeling. Nothing.
I love you. I see you. And I promise you — the "you" you've been searching for was never lost. It's just been waiting, patiently, for you to turn toward it and say hello.
If this stirred something in you and you want to keep exploring, a few episodes of The Soul Essence Podcast go right to the heart of it. Episode 31 :: Light, Thoughts, & Energy breaks down how your energy tells the world exactly who you are before you ever speak — the mechanics of how your divine essence actually moves through you. Episode 34 :: The Lies We Tell Ourselves & How to Get Free goes deep on the false identities and self-deceptions we don't even recognize as lies, and how to release them. And Episode 23 :: The Ascension Process - Leaving Duality Behind speaks beautifully to shedding the lower-self identity and stepping into the truth of who you are.
