When Life Feels Like Too Much

When Life Feels Like Too Much

There’s something every single one of us carries at one point or another, no matter how far along the path we are: stress.

So many of you have written in feeling like the weight of everything — the world, the body, the to-do lists, the heaviness in the air right now — is just too much. And I want to start by saying something gently and clearly: feeling stressed does not mean you're doing it wrong. It doesn't mean you've fallen off your path. It means you're a human being with a soul, moving through a dense and demanding world, and something inside you is asking to be tended to.

Let's tend to it together.

———

Stress Often Arrives As A Messenger

Here's something I've come to understand deeply: the hard, upsetting, stressful things in life very often show up as teachers. They arrive to show us something about ourselves, to point at a pattern, to wake us up to what needs to shift.

That doesn't make the stress pleasant. It doesn't mean you have to be grateful for it in the moment or slap a smile on top of it. But it does mean that when stress rises up in you, there's usually a root underneath it — something asking to be seen. Sometimes the root is a genuine life circumstance. Sometimes it's something you ate that your body is sensitive to. Sometimes it's the energy of the environment you're in, or technology, or the fields around you. Sometimes it's an old wound getting activated so it can finally clear.

The point is: stress is rarely random, and it's rarely just "in your head." Your job isn't to shame yourself for feeling it. Your job is to get curious about what it's pointing to.

Please Stop Telling Yourself To "Calm Down"

I have to say this one plainly, because I see it hurt people.

When you're in a state of stress or anxiety and you (or someone else) says "just calm down," you're skipping several steps. Telling a stressed nervous system to calm down doesn't calm anything — it usually just adds a layer of frustration on top of the stress. Of course you don't want to be in that state. But you can't leap straight to calm without first figuring out what's making you feel this way.

So instead of commanding yourself to relax, try slowing down and asking: What is this actually about? What happened? What did I take in — a conversation, a food, an energy, a fear — that I haven't processed yet? You don't have to have the answer immediately. Sometimes the most healing thing is simply to stop intervening, stop forcing, and give yourself the space and permission to feel what's there and move through it at your own pace.

Don't Skip The Feeling (Or It Splinters Off)

This is one of the most important things I can share with you about stress, and it goes against almost everything the "high vibe" culture tells us.

When something stressful happens and you try to skip straight over it — to leap to "well, that's just life, I'm fine, moving on" — that unprocessed energy doesn't actually disappear. It splinters off into what I call a dump aspect: a little part of you that carries all the stress and negativity you didn't let yourself feel, tucked away out of sight but still living inside you. It's like that cartoon character walking around with his own personal storm cloud following him everywhere.

The way through is not to bypass the emotion but to honor it. All of it. You are allowed to say, "This is hard. I'm experiencing frustration. I'm experiencing overwhelm." Notice the language there, though — you're experiencing these things; you are not becoming them. You can feel the full weight of a stressful moment without claiming it as your identity, without letting it anchor into you and take over. Feel it, let it teach you, and let it move.

Move It Out Of The Body

Here's the truth that changes everything: the body is where stress loves to live. It will hold onto tension and heaviness until you actively tell it — and help it — to let go. The longer stress stays parked in your system, the more it gets "crusted in," and the more you risk walking around carrying it everywhere you go.

So when stress hits me, the very first thing I do is get it out of my body physically. I move. I go for a long walk, I work out, I run, I dance. Sometimes I go somewhere and scream. Some people drum. It almost doesn't matter which one — what matters is that you pulse the energy out of your body before it connects into you more deeply.

A few simple, free practices I come back to again and again:

  • Breathe. You don't need to know a single thing about formal breathwork. Just breathe consciously, on purpose, aware that you're doing it. Big breath in through the nose, sigh it out. The breath is right inside you, it's always available, and it costs nothing.

  • Put your hand on your heart. This tiny act is enormous. You're placing an energy center — the palm of your hand — directly onto your heart, and acknowledging yourself in a physical way. Add a few kind words while you do it.

  • Move the body. Walk, run, dance, shake, stretch, drum, scream into a pillow. Let the stress have somewhere to go.

  • Get support for what's stuck. Some tension the body holds needs help to release — bodywork, a healing session, someone to hold space. There is no shame in this. It is vital, and you are allowed to need it.

Gratitude Is The Magnet (But Not As A Bypass)

I want to be careful here, because this is where a lot of spiritual teaching goes sideways. Gratitude is genuinely one of the most powerful states you can live in — it acts like a magnet for the good things you're wanting to draw into your life, and it slowly burns away all of life's little daily complaints.

But — and this matters — gratitude is not a tool for skipping your feelings. It's not "I'm so stressed, but I'm just going to force myself to feel grateful instead." That's bypassing, and we just talked about where that goes. Real gratitude comes after you've let yourself feel what's true. You process the hard thing, you move it through the body, and then you gently return to gratitude as your home base — as the magnet you want to keep clean and clear.

———

If stress rises up in you this week, beautiful soul, try walking through it like this:

  • Pause before "calm down." Ask what the stress is actually pointing to instead of commanding it away.

  • Let yourself feel it — fully — without claiming it as who you are. You are experiencing stress; you are not stress itself.

  • Move it out of the body. Breathe, walk, dance, shake, put a hand on your heart. Don't let it crust in.

  • Return to gratitude once you've felt what's real — not as a mask over the stress, but as the ground you come home to.

And please hear me on this last part: if the weight ever becomes too heavy to move on your own, reaching for help is not weakness — it's wisdom. Sometimes we simply cannot come out of a stress state without someone to help us, and that is completely okay. If what you're carrying feels like more than everyday stress, please reach out to a trusted person or a licensed professional who can support you properly.

———

You are not meant to white-knuckle your way through life, sweet soul. Stress is not a character flaw. It's a wave — and waves are meant to move through you, not to live in you.

I love you. I see you. And I'm so proud of you for tending to yourself.

Sending you the biggest hug.

If you'd like to go deeper on this, a few episodes of The Soul Essence Podcast explore these threads directly: one on trauma, healing, and spiritual growth (including how the heavy things become teachers, and how to know when it's time to seek professional help); one on raising your vibration without the toxic positivity (honoring all of your emotions instead of bypassing them); and a FAQ conversation that gets into why "just calm down" misses the mark and how unprocessed stress splinters off inside us. If you're feeling called to clear what's been weighing on you at a deeper level, my booking page is always open to you.
